Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy is an extremely safe and effective procedure that’s used to treat veins that reflux that are close to the skin surface, near nerves or that are very tortuous. A sclerosant solution is injected into the abnormal veins, which causes the vein wall to collapse. The veins dissolve and disappear as the body gradually absorbs them. An ultrasound is used to guide placement of the medication and monitored for successful treatment.
Procedure benefits for patients
- Little to no bruising — skin is left smooth and unmarked
- Spider veins disappear very quickly
- Results are long-lasting
- Ultrasound guidance for precise needle placement
The procedure begins with the doctor performing a detailed duplex ultrasound to map out the problem veins. Then, using the ultrasound as a guide, the doctor precisely guides the needle to the hidden problem veins. Several injections will be required to effectively treat the vein. The procedure normally takes between a half an hour and an hour.
Most patients can return to their normal activities immediately. However, it’s not recommended that you lift heavy objects or engage in high-impact activities for at least two weeks.
