Cosmetic Sclerotherapy is used to treat unsightly spider veins. A sclerosant is injected into the damaged vein, which irritates the lining of the blood vessel. The blood vessel swells and sticks together and the blood clots. Over time, the vein turns to scar tissue and fades from view. Sclerotherapy is still considered the best option for the treatment of spider veins.
Procedure benefits for patients
- Results are readily visible
- Normal activity can be resumed immediately
- In-office procedure is usually completed in 15 minutes
- Patients experience more confidence in the appearance of their legs
A very fine needle is used to inject a salt solution. At this point, some patients experience mild discomfort, especially when larger veins are being treated. This discomfort usually disappears after a minute or two. The sclerosent solution is designed to irritate the walls of the blood vessel. The walls of the blood vessel then swell and, over time, turn into scar tissue and disappear. This is an office-based procedure.
After the procedure, you will wear medical-grade compression stockings for one to three weeks. Most people are able to return to normal activities immediately, although strenuous activities will be limited for one to two weeks.
